2011 Health, Disability and Long-Term Care Insurance Complaint ComparisonPublished by the Maine Bureau of Insurance Paul R. LePage Eric Cioppa Health, Disability and Long-Term Care Insurance Complaint Comparison The center pages of this brochure show information about the number of individual and group health insurance, disability and long-term care complaints received by the Bureau of Insurance from consumers in 2011. This information is provided as a tool for you to use when you compare these kinds of insurance companies. Other important information to consider when comparing insurance companies includes policy prices, what the policy covers, what the policy does not cover (policy exclusions), and the financial strength of the company. This Complaint Comparison was compiled differently from the comparisons posted in prior years. This year's comparison includes long-term care for the first time. Additionally, there were slight changes in the kinds of complaints included in the index and a major change in what written premium is included. In prior years written premium came from Annual Statements filed by insurance companies and included Medicare and Medicaid which the bureau does not regulate. This year's written premium comes from the 286-A report (Supplemental Insurance Reporting form) and includes only the following types of coverage: Disability Income, Medical - Large Group, Medical - Small Group, Medical - Individual, Dental, Medicare Supplement, Cancer & Dread Disease, Short-Term Medical, and Vision.
The table shows the following about each company: the amount of direct premium that was written in 2011; the number of complaints received by the Bureau from consumers against that insurer during 2011; and a complaint index that compares the share of complaints to the share of premiums written in 2011. We also included the complaint index for 2010. Why use a complaint index? With a complaint index you can see at a glance how a health insurer compares to the average. A complaint index of 1 is average. Less than 1 is better than average. Greater than 1 is worse than average. Not all companies who sell health, disability or long-term care insurance in Maine appear in this brochure. Some companies do not write enough insurance in Maine to show meaningful information. This brochure includes only companies that either: have 5 or more complaints received or collected premiums for health policies sold in Maine that represent at least 1% of the total written premium collected by all insurers selling health, disability and long-term care insurance policies in Maine for the year 2011. NOTE: Many companies are part of an insurance "group." If you can't find your company on the chart, look at the lists beneath it to see if it is part of a group.
