Bureau of Remediation & Waste Management
Oil Storage Tank Search & Operator Training Online Service

Welcome to the Oil Storage Tank Search & Operator Training Online Service

This free service provides public access to search the state's database of registered oil storage tanks and obtain registration certificates. The state's database includes all underground tanks that have been registered with DEP since 1986 (including tanks that have been removed) and aboveground tanks that have either been registered with DEP or permitted by the State Fire Marshal's office. Not all tanks that have been permitted with the Fire Marshal's office are in this database.

This service also allows operators of registered oil storage tank facilities in Maine to access an online training program and achieve certification as a Class A/B operator. In Maine, there must be at least one (1) A/B Operator for each underground tank facility. You may obtain one or more individual certifications for specific facilities by using the registration number for the location. The TankSmart program will then identify the modules applicable to the tanks and equipment at the specific facility. If you need certification for many facilities or want certification to operate any facility you may choose to become certified as a "General Operator", using the number zero (0) as your registration number. General Operators are trained and certified using all of the TankSmart modules. Certificates are valid for 2 years after which you must re-take the training and quizzes.

In 2018, the Department introduced an additional voluntary training program for Petroleum Delivery Drivers. This program is designed to provide information regarding the proper delivery of home heating fuel, gasoline and other petroleum products to both aboveground tanks and underground tanks. The training is not a substitute for any DOT or other regulatory agency mandatory training; it is supplemental only. Registration is similar to that of the A/B Operator Training program except that you will not use any registration number initially. Instead use the drop-down menu and change the answer to "YES" confirming you are a delivery driver. Upon successful completion of the training and associated quiz, you will be sent a link to a printable certificate. The certification, like that of the A/B Operator, is valid for 2 years. When logging in as a returning user you will need to use the number 99099 in the Registration number field.

Who can use this service?

Both the Registered Oil Tank Search and Operator Certification Program are available to the public, free of charge. The Operator Certification Program is designed for operators of underground oil storage facilities and the Petroleum Delivery Driver Program is intended for drivers who make deliveries to home heating oil tanks, gas stations, bulk oil facilities, or any kind of petroleum storage tank.
