Notification of Employee of Possible EmergencyDEPARTMENT OF ADMINISTRATIVE & FINANCIAL SERVICES No.: OSER-42 Date: March 5, 1990 Subject: Notification of Employee of Possible Emergency To: All Holders of Employee Relations Manuals From: Kenneth A. Walo, Director, Bureau of Employee Relations As you are already aware the State as an employer is committed to meeting its responsibility of notifying employees of a possible emergency involving a family member. However, during contract bargaining it came to the attention of this office that there have been isolated instances where an employee was not notified of an emergency in a timely manner, and/or a supervisor had incorrectly deemed an emergency not to be an emergency and failed to notify the employee. It is imperative that a supervisor not engage in deciding whether an emergency is serious enough to notify an employee immediately. It is the responsibility of the affected employee to determine whether an emergency is of a nature that demands immediate attention. We are hereby communicating the following policy statement to all departments and agencies. In the event of a non work-related emergency, the affected employee's department/agency shall make every effort to notify the employee without delay and allow the employee the necessary time to determine by telephone the nature and extent of the emergency. Please arrange that all supervisory and other personnel, who may have responsibility for receiving and relaying emergency notifications to employees, are made aware of this understanding. Thank you.
