Challenge for May

The hymnal used in a certain church contains 680 hymns. There are three hymns at each service and the hymns are indicated on a hymn board which uses cards showing one of the digits 0 to 9. What is the minimum number of cards needed to show any combination of three different hymn numbers? There are no leading zeros and the same card can be used for 6 and 9.

Please e-mail Lester Dickey with your answer and your name, phone number, and the organization for which you work. Or call Barbara Buck at 624-9501. The winner will be drawn from all the correct entries and will receive a FREE pizza from Spanky's Pizza. All answers must be in no later than the 14th of the month.

Last month's challenge brought 6 answers, of which 5 were correct. The winner is Douglas Cotnoir of Accounts and Controls, chosen by random drawing.

The answer to last month’s Challenge is: There are 204 squares of various sizes that can be made by following the lines on a standard checkerboard.
