Challenge for September

by Lester Dickey

You are approached by a rich eccentric of your acquaintance, who offers you a temporary job. You have a choice of payment options:

  1. A flat fee of $1,000,000 or
  2. One cent the first day, 2 cents the second day, 4 cents the third day, and so forth, doubling the amount each day.

The question for the pizza is - assuming the job is for 30 days, which is the better deal?

The "harder" question, for which you win nothing but the admiration of your peers, is - if you choose option 2, how much will you get paid for the 30 day job?

You will be eligible for the drawing if you get the first question correct. There is no prize for the second question.

Please e-mail Lester Dickey with your answer and your name, phone number, and the organization for which you work. Or call Barbara Buck at 624-9501. The winner will be drawn from all the correct entries and will receive a FREE pizza from Spanky's Pizza. All answers must be in no later than the 14th of the month.

Last month's challenge brought 40 answers, with 30 of them correct. The winner, chosen by random drawing, is Jeff Pettengill of Department of Human Services.

The answer to the July Challenge is: SEVEN is the answer to the first part and C, J, K, P, Q, and Z are left over after crossing out all the letters in the numbers from ONE to ONE BILLION.
