The new University of Maine Graduate Certificate Program in Information Systems http://www.umaine.edu/graduate/programs/GraduateProgInfoSys.htm focuses on the technical, managerial and policy issues associated with constructing and managing computer-based information systems for modern organizations. It also stresses the importance of the end user in resolving information system design and data processing problems. The objectives of the program are to meet the growing demand in society for high-level information system skills, and provide a path for women and men from diverse fields to rapidly transition to information system career paths by providing them with foundation graduate level courses in information systems.
This Graduate Certificate Program provides the foundation for the newly-developed Master of Science in Information Systems. Students who complete the six-course Certificate Program may earn the Master of Science in Information Systems by completing four additional courses. It is offered through a collaborative effort by faculty in the Department of Computer Science, Department of Spatial Information Science and Engineering, and the Maine Business School.
Required Courses: The graduate certificate in Information Systems requires completion of the following six courses offered on a yearly basis:
COS 598 - Software Engineering
COS 598 - Topics in Computer Science: Networking
BUA661 - Knowledge Management and Decision Support Systems
BUA465 - Information Systems Development
SIE 451 - Engineering Databases and Information Systems
SIE 525 - Information Systems Law and Policy
These six courses constitute the required core courses for the Masters of Science (MS) in Information Systems.
Admissions Requirements: Minimum general prerequisites for admission to the certificate program include the following courses (or comparable courses completed at other universities):
MAT 126 - Calculus I
MAT 215 or MAT 232 - Statistics
COS 220 - Introduction to Computer
Science I (C++)
Admission standards for the Certificate program are exactly the same as those for the MS degree program in Information Systems. Therefore application to the MS degree program is highly encouraged. However, prospective students may take up to two courses as a graduate nondegree student prior to formal admission to either the MS or Certificate program, provided specific course prerequisites have been met
Students with a GRE score less than 1500 and an undergraduate grade point average less than 3.0 are discouraged from applying to the program. To receive application materials, contact the University of Maine Graduate School. Online application forms are available on the Web at: www.umaine.edu/graduate/onlineap.htm.
Distance Delivery: All six Graduate Certificate Program courses are offered using live streaming video technology. In order to complete these courses using distance methods, access, software and hardware requirements must be met. Information on hardware and software needed for the courses is available on the web at:
