Championing Composites

How a Maine agency has taken the lead in promoting a new technology

By the Maine Science and Technology Foundation ( http://www.mstf.org/ )

When Milbridge, Maine, completed construction of its municipal pier in June, the event drew widespread publicity. A Maine town achieved the distinction of building the world’s first pier from composite materials. The deck of the pier had the strength of concrete at one-third the weight. The Maine Department of Transportation has been an important advocate of using composite materials in its construction projects. The State agency works closely with the University of Maine's Advanced Engineered Wood Composites Center, which developed the composites used in the Milbridge pier and other construction projects around the state. MaineScience.org wanted to learn more about using composite materials for bridge decks, so we interviewed Steve Abbott, a bridge engineer with the Maine Department of Transportation, to find out how MDOT has come to be such a vigorous proponent of this technology.
