Maine State Museum Announces New Hours and Free Days

The Maine State Museum in Augusta has sweetened the bad news of reduced hours and state closure days with some special days of free admission.

The four-floor museum adjacent to the State House in Augusta has announced new hours, effective July 1, 2009. The museum will be open Tuesday through Friday, 9 to 5 and Saturday, 10 to 4. The museum will be closed on Sundays, Mondays and state holidays.

The museum will also be closed on “state government closure days.” In 2009, those days are July 6, August 7, September 4, October 9, and December 24.

Also announced are free days for hard times. The museum will be offering free admission this summer on Saturday, June 27 in celebration of the Whatever Family Festival’s Day in Capitol Park. On July 18, the popular Family Geography Day returns to the museum with free admission and live dance and musical performances. In August, free museum admission will be offered on all Saturdays.

“While visitation is up this year, our budget is down,” said Maine State Museum Director Joseph R. Phillips. “Maine’s share of the economic downturn has resulted in reduced staffing for the museum and “state government closure days”. We are pleased in spite of this to offer special free days as a stimulus to people who love Maine’s nature and history.”

In the past six months, two new major exhibitions, “At Home in Maine” and “Uncommon Threads: Wabanaki Textiles, Clothing, and Costume” have opened to the public. These have added an entire floor of personal stories and remarkable artifacts from Maine’s past. In the case of “Uncommon Threads,” visitors will discover beautiful and rare historic pieces made by Maine’s native people. Many of these artifacts have been borrowed from other museums and are being shown in Maine for the first time.

The Maine State Museum is located adjacent to the State House off State Street in Augusta. For more information, and a complete schedule of hours and special events, see the museum’s website www.mainestatemuseum.org
