ORONO, Maine - At a special meeting Tuesday night,
councilors unanimously passed two motions necessary
for the proposed sale of a town-owned island to a local
professor. In the first motion, the council confirmed
that the proposed sale of 62-acre Ayers Island to George
Markowsky is in the best interest of the town. The
second motion authorized Town Manager Gerry Kempen
to negotiate with Markowsky directly the terms of a
possible sale.
A proposed deed was drawn up by the council last week
and will become a basis for negotiations, Kempen said
Wednesday. After negotiations, the proposed deed will
be resubmitted to the council with any possible alterations
brought up during the process.
The actual sale of the island would require a third
vote by the council at a later date.
Since 1999, Markowsky has had a lease-purchase agreement
for Ayers Island and the former Striar Textile Mill
where he hopes to build a research and development
park.
Tuesday night marked the 74th public meeting involving
Ayers Island since July 1997 when the town first entertained
a proposal for a new development of the island, Kempen
said. |
