Week 2003
Maine Science and Technology Foundation
February 18, 2003
WESTBROOK and GORHAM, Maine - Maine engineers will
celebrate Maine Engineers Week during a banquet on
February 28, 2003 and an engineering expo for children
on March 1, 2003. The Maine Engineering Promotion Council
(MEPC) is coordinating both events to increase public
awareness of engineers' contributions to society and
coincide with National Engineers Week.
Maine
Engineers Banquet
The annual Maine Engineers
Banquet, on the evening of February 28, will feature
speaker Lawrence Roth,
executive director of the Infrastructure Security
Partnership (TISP). Roth will discuss how new concerns
about homeland security are changing engineers' responsibilities
as they design structures and systems. Roth is also assistant executive director and chief
operating officer of the American Society of Civil
Engineers, whose Critical Infrastructure Response Initiative
is assessing infrastructure vulnerability and investigating
ways to limit potential damage from natural and man-made
disasters.
Maine
Engineering Expo
MEPC
hopes to draw 1,000 people to its Maine Engineering
Expo on March 1. The Expo will
include interactive
exhibits and engineering problem solving activities
designed by engineering schools, government agencies,
and engineering companies. The Expo is designed
to introduce children in grades 5-8 to the engineering
profession. Guest speaker Tom Bickford, FIRST Lego League representative,
will make a presentation about Lego robotics during
the Expo, and the University of Southern Maine School
of Applied Science, Engineering, and Technology will
offer tours.
