7th Annual Summer Reading Celebration - August 17, 2007
|
Hundreds of summer reading participants and their families participated in the 7th Annual Southern Maine Library District Summer Reading Celebration on August 17 at the Seashore Trolley Museum in Kennebunkport.
First Lady Karen Baldacci opened the Celebration with warm words of welcome, and then took a ride on one of the historic trolleys. |

Authors and entertainers for the Celebration were selected for their tie to Maine’s summer reading theme “Get a Clue @ Your Library.” All were involved with mysteries – either in fiction books, science or nature.

Each author read under the big green entertainment tent, followed by autographing sessions with Longfellow Books. Portland’s Sarah Thomson (above), author of The Amazing Snakes (An I-Can-Read Book), demonstrated the longest snake in the world. Kennebunk author and illustrator Laura Rankin (right) drew an original tale featuring her book characters from Fluffy and the Baron. Brian Lies read Bats at the Beach.

Magician Peter Boie regaled the audience with a straight jacket act and amazing feats with birds and disappearing balls.
“Clifford the Big Red Dog” strolled the grounds, delighting fans of all ages. |
|

Over 400 children received free books after completing a Scavenger Hunt requiring them to visit exhibits and attractions on the trolley grounds.
Under the white tent were exhibits by the Brick Store Museum of Kennebunk and the Kennebunkport Conservation Trust as well as Scholastic book sales.
