Children's Librarians | Public Library Directors | School Librarians | Public Library Trustees

For Children's Librarians

The meetings for Children's Librarians are especially for staff who work with children in public libraries. The sessions will be similar to the District meetings for public library directors and school librarians -- sharing sessions, not workshops. Please bring ideas & questions to share with the group; handouts welcomed. Refreshments will be served.

Please register by contacting the SMLD Office -
email: smld@portland.lib.me.us,  Tel. 871-1766 or 1-800-649-7696

For Public Library Directors

Southern Maine Library District Meetings

Meeting schedules and sites are determined by the member libraries in each of the four groups defined below. Invitations are sent via email to each group. Meetings include informal discussions about management topics of current interest and invited guest speakers.

The four groups are:

  • Chattering Cheeses - Libraries north of Portland
  • Loose Librarians - Libraries adjacent to Sebago Lake
  • Talking Heads - Larger libraries in York and selected Cumberland communities
  • Yapping Yorkies - Smaller libraries in York County

Statewide Meetings

A statewide one-day "Public Library Directors Institute" is held the second Tuesday of June, usually at the Augusta Civic Center. The Institute includes a special orientation for new directors; guest speakers; and updates on statewide library legislation and initiatives. Registration forms are mailed to all Maine public libraries each spring.

For School Librarians

Open meetings held in member school libraries -- often in newly-constructed facilities -- for staff working with students K - 12

For Public Library Trustees

Maine Regional Library System

The Maine Regional Library System has occasionally sponsored statewide meetings in cooperation with the Maine Library Trustee Association. These meetings have been held at member public libraries or via the statewide ATM videoconferencing system in Maine public schools.
