Library of the Month

Background

The “Library of the Month” program was started in October 2001 by the Southern Maine Library District to provide information about member libraries – especially those in new or renovated buildings, celebrating special events or anniversaries, or with special collections and services. Libraries of all types – public, school, post-secondary, medical and special – were featured, a total of 59 libraries. The selected libraries were featured on the SMLD web site with accompanying photos and a brief overview of the library’s history, collections, staff, building features, and mission. Each library was loaned a “Library of the Month” banner [2’ x 6’] with grommets for hanging inside the library and given LOM bookmarks and signs.

Library Spotlight

In 2007, the “Library of the Month” became a statewide program. Selected libraries will be featured on the “Spotlight” section of the Maine Libraries website http://www.maine.gov/libraries/.  “Library of the Month” banner, bookmarks and signs are sent to each featured library. “Spotlight” libraries are archived on the website for one year.
