Library Makeovers

What is a Makeover?

A Library Makeover Team consisting of district librarians and staff from Tucker Library Interiors help improve the attractiveness and efficiency of selected Maine libraries during a one day visit. The Makeover Team not only make changes in furnishings and equipment during their visit, but also offer suggestions for the future. Previous makeovers have resulted in many improvements as libraries have continued to make progress.

Background

Many rural Maine libraries have part-time staff with limited hours and resources. Often they are in need of assistance in order to improve interior spaces. In order to help these libraries get started on improvements, in 2006 the Southern Maine Library District Board invited libraries in its District to apply for a makeover. Applications were sent to the directors of rural public libraries in towns under 5,000 population as well as to all elementary school libraries. Five public libraries were selected for makeovers in 2006.

In 2007 the program was expanded to the Central Maine Library District with makeovers offered to libraries in towns of 7500 and under. The program is now open to any Maine Regional Library System libraries in towns under 7500.

Hiram Librarian Pam Slattery-Thomas commented “The day was a lot of fun. I'm really grateful to the team whose 'can do' spirit uplifted and motivated me; and I'm working eagerly to follow up on their great suggestions - including the weeding! The only things missing were the camera crews and Ty Pennington."

From Hollis director Maureen Cole: “This was a much needed and encouraging event. I hope you will return in 6 months and see some of the long range goals accomplished! Even little children have commented on the new look when they enter the library.”

Kezar Falls librarian Kathy Hawkes commented: “I was thrilled to have our library chosen for a makeover. I am totally amazed at what a difference the makeover has made. The library looks fresh and spacious!! We're excited to follow through with the additional suggestions made during our session. Many, many thanks to the makeover team for their time and effort!!”

How Are Libraries Selected?

A Makeover Team of librarians select the libraries based on project feasibility and need as demonstrated by written applications and accompanying photos. There is no fee to apply.
