Southern Maine Library District Plan of Service 2008-2009

The purpose of the Maine Regional Library System is to promote improved service for the constituents of member libraries.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

Goal I. Increase Public Awareness, Use and Support of Maine Libraries

  1. Introduce new users to MARVEL (via exhibits, talks and print communication)
  2. Distribute public service announcements about libraries to southern Maine radio stations
  3. Promote Literary Map via displays, library meetings and newsletters

Goal II. Facilitate Professional Development

  1. Conduct training for school & public library staff about teen programming and issues
  2. Hold a workshop about graphic novel selection
  3. Provide continuing education for trustees (what is involved in being a trustee, buildings, personnel, overall running of the library)
  4. Provide information about appropriate weeding techniques and policies
  5. Sponsor workshops in cooperation with the National Library of Medicine
  6. Hold training session on copyright awareness
  7. Co-sponsor Council meeting about improving libraries

Goal III. Encourage Resource Sharing and Regional Cooperation 

  1. Encourage the production of local literary maps
  2. Organize an IT fair on website improvement, new technology and library software
  3. Provide suggestions for improving effectiveness of Maine Regional Library System
  4. Conduct Performers’ Showcase with block booking options
  5. Provide opportunities for sharing information about children’s services, IT, and reference
  6. Provide information about green tips

Goal IV. Foster Literacy

  1. Produce Maine Literary Map in cooperation with Portland newspapers and partner organizations
  2. Participate in Festival of the Book 2009
  3. Prepare and distribute list of outstanding children’s & young adult books (“Cream of the Crop”)
  4. Hold monthly meetings for school and children’s librarians about new books
  5. Co-sponsor children’s and young adult literature conference (“Reading Round-Up”)

Goal V. Improve Communication among Libraries, Library Organizations, and Other Groups

  1. Assist library staff in using WebJunction  for continuing education and sharing ideas
  2. Conduct orientation for new Southern Maine Library District staff & members
  3. Create a Southern Maine Library District listserv
  4. Publish quarterly newsletter for SMLD members

Goal VI. Foster Improved Library Service

  1. Provide guidelines to help librarians improve reference service and assessment
  2. Promote discussion/guidelines for statistics standards and incorporate into MLA Standards
  3. Conduct three library facilities makeovers and one library technology makeover
  4. Assist libraries in creating and updating recommended policies
