This worksheet was created as an exploration of the MARVEL resources, not as a test, by Pam Goucher of Freeport Middle School. The idea is to get comfortable using the resource, not to get the perfect, right answer.

Go to Kids icon to access datbases useful for school age users get access for the following:

Britannica Online School Edition

  1. In the search box, enter the name of any country you would like to visit.
  2. When the search results come up, look on the right side of the page for "Multimedia". Choose an image, map, video/animation or photo.
  3. Describe what you found.

EBSCO Animals Part of EBSCOhost

  1. What is the lifespan of a Maine Coon Cat?
  2. How wide can the Japanese giant spider crab open the claw at the tip of its legs?

Funk and Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia

  • Hungry? Search Ben & Jerry’s then search ice cream. Which has more results?

Health Source Consumer Edition Part of EBSCOhost

  • This gives you articles on a broad variety of health issues.
  • Be sure to check "Full Text" box if you want to read the article online.
  • Try some searches to see what you find. Possible topics:
    1. Ice ream
    2. Bird flu
    3. Swimming
    4. Which search gives you more results: chocolate AND men or chocolate AND women?

  • Students
    • Your teacher asks you to bring in a magazine article about immigration for a classroom debate on the topic.
    • Locate one by using the options they give you.
    • Write the magazine title & date.

  2. Modify the search by adding AND history and see how the results change.

Middle Search Plus Part of EBSCOhost

  1. Search to find a list of articles about wikipedia.
  2. Choose either an article that supports using wikipedia for research or is against using it for research.
  3. List the magazine name and date and tell which side the article supports.

  1. Explore the tabs across the top of the home page.
  2. Go to the tab that says "Search our database" and then go to "Describe a plot".
  3. Type in this plot description (or make up your own): ghost on the Maine coast.
  4. Write one book title that you found.

NoveList K-8

Like Novelist but only lists titles written for K-8 age group.

  1. Try on the home page, click on the "grab and go booklist" link.
  2. Could you locate the booklist for 6-8th graders on novels about the Civil War and slavery?
  3. List one novel

  1. What are the top searches today?
  2. Your teacher has asked you to locate the text of a speech or letter by Abraham Lincoln (called a "primary source document') Find one.
  3. Locate a newspaper or magazine article about blogging.

Twayne's Authors Series

In Authors A-Z:

  1. Look up Dr. Seuss, author of The Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and Ham, etc. (Look by Last Name).
  2. Click on a few of the chapters just to get an idea of the kind of information that is available.
