19th Annual Reading Round-Up of Children’s and Young Adult Literature Conference, "Can Read But Don’t Wanna"

Staff who work with children in public or school libraries are invited to attend. Reading Round-Up is a conference to learn ideas for promoting, marketing, evaluating, and purchasing noteworthy juvenile literature. Sponsored by the Maine Regional Library System and the Youth Services Section of the Maine Library Association.

Schedule

7:45–8:00 - Youth Services Section Business Meeting

8:00 - Registration. Book Sales. Exhibits.

8:30-9:00 - Lupine, Katahdin, Chickadee, and Maine Student Book Award Announcements

9:00-10:00 - Keynote Speaker: Pat Feehan “Aliteracy – Motivating the Dormant Reader”

10:00-10:45 - Break. Book Sales. Author Signings. Exhibits 

Workshops (Morning) 10:45 to 12:15

  • A) Cream of the Crop (grade 3–12) -- Leslie Rounds, Vicky Smith [repeated in afternoon] ~ Outstanding 2007 books.
  • B) Cream of the Crop (pre K–lower elementary) -- Louise Capizzo, Kathy George, Marilyn Taylor [repeated in afternoon] ~ Outstanding 2007 books.
  • C) The Newest Maine Children's Books (all ages) -- Lynn Plourde ~ Learn about the newest Maine children's books from picture books to chapter books.
  • D) Sharing Session for School Librarians (Grades 3-5) -- Susan Pease, Facilitator ~ Each participant is invited to bring one idea to share with the group. Please bring 20 one-page handouts with your name, school, email and summary of your idea.
  • E) Add Signing to Your Storytime (babies/toddlers/preschool) -- Mary Buckley [repeated in afternoon] ~ More and more parents are signing with their babies, toddlers, and children. Learn how to get started in your special signing storytimes. Topics include the benefits of signing, how to incorporate signing with books, music, and more. Get excited about adding American Sign Language to your programs!
  • F) Accessible, Relevant Poetry: The Power of a Few Words and Lots of White Space (upper elementary, middle school and up) -- Maria Testa ~ Review works of poetry and verse novels that appeal to all kinds of readers through the power of words and emotions and a sense of social conscience. The audience for these works will also be discussed, both intended and "accidental."

Lunch

12:15 to 1:45 - Luncheon (buffet style), Exhibits, Cream of the Crop

12:30 to 1:30 - Luncheon breakout (boxed lunch), New this year! Limited number can attend; pre-registrants only. Once full, this choice will be removed from registration. “Margaret Chase Smith: A Woman for President” – Presenter Lynn Plourde ~ Maine has its own link to the 2008 presidential election with Margaret Chase Smith, who was the first woman from a major party to run for President, back in 1964.

  • I) Not for Adults Only: Recommended Adult Good Reads for Young Adults (tweens and teens) -- Pat Feehan ~ An interactive and multimedia book talk on award winning and notable adult books for Young Adults.          
  • J) Authors & Publishers – The Magic! (all ages) -- Cynthia Lord, Audrey Maynard ~ Tilbury House Editor Audrey Maynard and Newbery Honor author Cynthia Lord will share their personal stories about writing and publishing in Maine. Audrey will talk about working with first time authors and the challenges that small publishers face "finding the right manuscripts!" Cynthia will talk about the writing process for her book, Rules, and how it felt to be a first-time author from Maine and suddenly receive a call from the Newbery Committee.
  • K) Sharing Session for Public Libraries -- Jan Hamilton, Facilitator ~ Each participant is invited to bring one idea to share with the group. Please bring 20 one-page handouts with your name, library, email and summary of your idea.

Keynote Speaker

Dr. Pat Feehan, Professor, University of South Carolina’s School of Library and Information Science since 1988, has worked with three cohorts of Maine USC graduate students. She has served as a public library administrator, youth services coordinator and manager, and state consultant. She received her MLS from Western Michigan University and her Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Fee

$55 Payment must be received to guarantee space. This conference usually sells out quickly so do not delay mailing check!  PLEASE NO PURCHASE ORDERS! Fee includes lunch (buffet style with vegetarian choices or boxed lunch for luncheon breakout). Include confirmation email with check.

Registration Reimbursements

A limited number of registration reimbursements ($55) are available for 1st time attendees AND for people who travel more than three hours one way. Email Cheryl.Ramsay@maine.gov to request a reimbursement AFTER registering. Indicate “1st time attendee” or “travel funds.” If applying for travel funds, please also note amount of driving time one way. First come, first served. Reimbursement checks mailed after the conference. All applicants will be contacted.

Book Signings

Copies of presenters and award winning books will be available for purchase. We respectfully ask that you not bring personal copies for signing due to time constraints. Participants may purchase books during Registration 8:00 – 8:30, during the morning break, and during lunch.

Contact Hours

The Maine State Library no longer issues CEU’s (Continuing Education Units). Program participants are expected to maintain records of attendance at professional development workshops. Certificates stating .65 contact hours will be issued to all participants for record-keeping purposes.
