District Consultants - Maine Regional Library System

About the Three Service Districts:

  • CMLD - Central Maine Library District
  • NMLD - Northeastern Maine Library District
  • SMLD - Southern Maine Library District

The Maine Regional Library System was created to improve library service for the citizens of Maine. Membership consists of public, school, academic, and special libraries. The Maine Regional Library System is administered by the Maine State Library in Augusta. Public Law 626, enacted in 1973, established three library service districts based on population.

Northeastern Maine Library District
Population: 403,774* 
Area: 19,103 square miles
Membership: 402 libraries

Central Maine Library District
Population: 456,432* 
Area: 9,446 square miles
Membership: 400 libraries

Southern Maine Library District
Population: 407,722* 
Area: 1,842 square miles
Membership: 292 libraries

District Councils:

  • District Councils consist of a representative from each member library or school system.
  • Councils meet at least twice each year.
  • Council members serve on district committees and boards.

  • Help individual libraries with management issues and building construction
  • Organize continuing education and training
  • Coordinate special projects
  • Promote public relations activities
  • Serve on statewide and regional committees.

Area Reference and Resource Centers (ARRCs)

ARRCs Provide

  • Interlibrary loan for libraries and citizens in its District:
  • Free library cards for patrons in its District
  • Backup reference services for libraries

Membership

Eligibility

Any public, school, academic or special library is eligible to join if it meets the criteria. Each member library appoints a representative to the district council. There is no charge for membership. To join, contact the district office for an application.

Regions Served by District and Member Libraries

  • Central Maine Library District serves Androscoggin, Franklin, Lincoln, Kennebec, Oxford, Sagadahoc, and Somerset Counties. CMLD Member Libraries
  • Northeastern Maine Library District serves Aroostook, Hancock, Know, Penobscot, Piscataquis, Waldo,and Washington Counties. NMLD Member Libraries
  • Southern Maine Library District serves Cumberland and York Counties, and selected Oxford County towns. SMLD Member Libraries
