Maine Libraries Celebration Guests

Legislators, librarians, authors and other guests attended a very successful Maine Libraries Week Celebration in the State Capitol's Hall of Flags on Thursday, January 13. Senate President Beth Edmonds introduced guest speakers Cynthia Voigt, author; J. Gary Nichols, State Librarian; and Maine Library Excellence Award winners representing the Camden and Bath public libraries. First Lady Karen Baldacci commented on the value of libraries and literacy. 

The Celebration honored recipients of awards to Maine librarians, libraries, and authors:

  • Anne Davis, Gardiner Public Library, Proquest Intellectual Freedom Award
  • Kathy Foss, Camden Rockport Middle School, Maine Association of School Libraries' Media Specialist of the Year
  • Diana Graettinger, Bangor Daily News, Maine Library Association's Journalism Award
  • J. Gary Nichols, Maine State Librarian, Maine Library Association's Outstanding Librarian of the Year
  • Geraldine Massey, Cony High School Principal, Maine Association of School Libraries' Administrator of the Year
  • Cynthia Voigt, Katahdin children's book award, Maine Library Association
  • Lupine children's book award honors winners, Maine Library Association
  • Patten Free Library, 2004 Maine Library Excellence Award
  • Camden Public Library, 2004 Maine Library Excellence Award
  • Lewiston Public Library Director Rick Speer, New York Times Librarian Award
  • Waterville High School Library, Grand Prize Winner in the American Library Association, "Get on Board and Read @ Your Library" Contest
