  1. Do not let your board select the architect or builder without you. You should visit places that the architect has designed and the architect should have experience specifically with libraries.
  2. Do not be intimidated by architects or builders. Librarians are the professionals who know the most about how and why a library functions best. And you are the one who will have to live with the result.
  3. Hopefully you will have a builder and architect who willing works closely and well with you. If necessary put yourself out there and advocate for your needs.
  4. Sometimes architects will sacrifice practicality and functionality, not to mention economy for design and creativity.
  5. Even though we all want an appealing and lovely library, getting the project featured in Architectural digest is not generally the librarians priority, but remember, in their secret heart of hearts it may the architect's dream.
  6. Don't have someone pick you an architect. Put out a bid.
