Library Legislation Advocacy

Governor Baldacci has recognized the cultural sector in his bond package by including $5,000,000 over three years for technology and capital improvements to cultural institutions.  The actual share that libraries would receive is not yet determined.

Update: The Governor's bond package was approved by the voters.  Information about New Century grants for libraries will be forthcoming in the spring of 2008.

LD793 – An Act to Provide Essential Library Resources to All Maine Communities would appropriate $2,800,000 for 2007 and 2008 for collection development and resource sharing, interlibrary loan delivery, digitization projects, expanded online database access, and for the improvement of area resource and reference centers.  This bill would provide funding for additional MARVEL databases, to pay for delivery system costs, and to allow libraries to purchase additional materials that can be shared statewide.

Update: This bill has been held over for the next session of the Legislature in 2008.
