Read-Aloud Volunteer for Seniors

Time Commitment

1-2 hours, weekly, 3 month commitment

Purpose

Read aloud to senior citizens housed in a nursing home or assisted living center.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Selects reading material
  • Reads to residents
  • Provides feedback to library director regarding these sessions on a regular basis

Skills/Abilities/Qualifications Required

  • Ability to speak and understand English, and to convey a positive, friendly attitude
  • Ability to work congenially with staff, patrons and other volunteers
  • Must provide own, reliable transportation
  • Ability to be contacted by telephone for scheduling changes and meetings
  • Ability to receive instruction from library staff, and the cooperation to abide by library policies and regulations
  • Must be dependable
  • Must be familiar with or willing to learn the different types of literary genre
  • Must be willing to learn NoveList Plus
  • Must have a love of reading, a clear loud reading voice, and a desire to share with seniors who are often no longer able to read on their own
