Nature of Work

The archivist will plan, organize, maintain and preserve specified print and non-print archival collections. Appraises and/or edits archival records and historically valuable materials held by the Library. Assists researches in locating materials within the collections. Develops policies and procedures and directly manages the acquisition, disposition and safekeeping of archival materials.

Supervision Received

Under indirect supervision, performs independently, with initiative and judgment. Work is reviewed through conferences, review of files and observations of results achieved.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develops the Library's archival collections and participates in the establishment and implementation of policies, procedures and standards for the Library's Regional History Center and Archives.
  • Develops and implements procedures for the acquisition, processing and preservation of archival materials.
  • Prepares descriptions and reference aids for use of archives, such as finding aids, lists, indexes, guides bibliographies, abstracts and microfilmed copies; cross indexes materials as required.
  • Advises and assists researchers in the locating and using archival materials.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements of Work

  • Master's degree in archival management, library science or history. If the degree is in one of the latter two (2) fields, a graduate-level course concentration in archival management is required. Archival work experience is mandatory.
  • Ability to assess objectives and operational requirements and to develop and implement suitable operational policies and/or procedures.
  • Knowledge of archival concepts, methodology and techniques.

Assistant Library Director

Description

The Assistant Librarian is in a supervisory position over the circulation desk and over the entire library during the absences of the Director. This employee also trains and supervises part-time personnel and volunteers.

Duties

Circulation service work includes the following:

  1. supervises the circulation desk, and staff or volunteers working in the library.
  2. trains new staff and/or volunteers on duties at the circulation desk and customer service policy.
  3. supervises the circulation of library materials, including new patron registration, reserve books, processing over-dues, and processing incoming books and 4. supervises the shelving of library materials;

Description

The Children's Librarian provides circulation, processing, statistical, reference and research services to patrons, teaches library skills to children, prepares and presents programs and displays, plans and implements story hours and the Summer Reading Program and selects materials for the Children's Library. This position works closely with the Library Director assisting with planning, organization and implementation of library programs and policy, and training and supervising Children's Library staff and volunteers. Head of Children's Services

Summary

The Head of Children?s Services is a professional level position responsible for the development and implementation of a full range of library services for children aged from infancy through at least age sixteen, and adults and agencies serving children. This position requires knowledge and application of current professional library techniques. The Head of Children?s Service?s responsibilities include: collection development, programming for young people, outreach services, maintenance of the Children?s Room, provision of reference services in the Children?s Room, and supervision of young library users and of Staff and volunteer assistants to the Head of Children?s Services. This position requires both a high degree of independent initiative and of coordination with Library Administration.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Maintenance of the Children?s Room

  • Assessing and making recommendations to the Director regarding the physical design of the Children?s Room, including furnishings and equipment.

Director This is a full time, professional position that leads the strategic development and management of the Learning Resource Centers. The Centers are professionally staffed health libraries whose mission is to improve patient care and community health through evidenced-based wellness, health education, and chronic disease self-management programs and services. The Director will lead the Centers' evolution from bricks and mortar facilities to virtual centers of excellence for patient, provider, and consumer education that differentiate the health system.

The Director is responsible for developing and implementing a strategic, system-wide vision, integrating with internal and external collaborators, budget development and oversight; fundraising (including grant writing), supervision of professional and administrative staff, and advancing key partnerships, marketing and outreach, quality improvement, and program evaluation.

Responsibilities include operating all aspects of a library and establishing unit goals, procedures, and priorities. This classification is distinguished from other Librarian classifications in that the employee is responsible for serving on the Administrative Segregation (Ad Seg) Panel and the Disciplinary Review Board. Work is performed under limited supervision.

The reference duties include responding to library patron's questions and the upkeep of reference materials. Summary

This is a professional position concerned with the general administration and management in accordance with the policies and directives of the Board of Directors and accepted library practices and procedures including the needs of the Town, as far as resources will permit. This position is involved with budget preparation and management, employee supervision, selection and evaluation of materials and service to the public.

  1. General administration and management
    • Prepares annual budget and assists the Library Board in presenting the budget to the Town Council, the Finance Committee, and the Town Meeting.
    • Administers the budget once it is approved.
    • Prepares an annual report to the Maine State Library, and as part of the budget, to the Finance Committee and the Town Council.
    • Keeps statistical records of the library with the help of employees (circulation, patron counts, use of services, additions and withdrawals of materials, etc.)
    • Supervises employees with the assistance of the Assistant Librarian and other employees as designated. This includes scheduling, day-to-day supervision, staff selection, evaluation, promotion, termination, etc.

    • Plans and /or oversees changes in the services provided by the library, including new services or downsizing, including helping the Board plan for the future.
