Casco Bay Ferry Services
The Commission minimally regulates the ferry service in Casco Bay provided by the Casco Bay Island Transit District (CBITD) as well as water taxi and charter service provided by a private companies. Chapter 510 of the Commission's rules governs the authorization and operation of ferries in Casco Bay. Pursuant to Chapter 51, CBITD must file schedules and rates setting forth the terms and conditions of its operations. The Commission, upon its own motion, or upon the request of 10 interested persons, may investigate the schedules and rates for compliance with Title 35-A. Chapter 560 of the Commission's rules require CBITD to post to notice of proposed rate increases as well as its current schedules and fares.
Chapter 520 of the Commission's rules governs unscheduled freight, charter, and water taxis service in Casco Bay. Water taxi providers must obtain a certificate of authority from the commission before offering service. Chapter 520 also sets minimum fare requirements for charter and water taxi service and limits the ability of charter companies to provide one way service to their customers.
