Your Electric Service

As a result of the restructuring of the electric utility industry in Maine, which took effect in March 2000, Maine consumers purchase their electricity services from two types of companies. Electricity suppliers compete to produce or sell the electricity itself and distribution companies deliver that electricity to homes and businesses and maintain the poles and wires to get it there. The Commission regulates these companies differently because electricity supply is a competitive service whereas electricity delivery is a monopoly service, that is, only one distribution utility is allowed to provide delivery service in any one area of Maine.
