Question 1:
Where can I find the school MEDMS code or SAU MEDMS code?
Answer 1:
All MEDMS school and SAU codes can be found at http://www.state.me.us/education/medms/codelist.htm
Question 2:
What is the Department's definition of 1:1?
Answer 2:
The Department's definition of 1:1 is that each individual student is assigned a laptop for his/her academic work. This is in contrast to cart or classroom sets where a student uses a different device in each classroom, and sometimes a different device in the same class on any given day.
Question 3:
We are anticipating hiring a new teacher, or have just hired a new teacher and do not have a MEDMS ID for that teacher at this time. How should we note this on the MLTI Staff Roster Spreadsheet?
Answer 3:
Enter "TBD". When the name and MEDMS ID for the teacher is known, please email that information to mlti.project@maine.gov.
Question 4:
How do I find our staff MEDMS ID?
Answer 4:
Each School District has a designated person(s) with access to MEDMS. Once they log in, they can run a report. Go to the "Application" pull down menu, select "data download", click Go. On the "Action" pull down menu select Staff, click Go. Select the school year & appropriate SAU if applicable and click submit. This will download a report including your Staff MEDMS ID's. MEDMS Staff ID is in column "AR" with a header of "State ID"
Question 5:
I have a teacher who is not eligible according to your guidelines, but I think they should get a laptop? Can they?
Answer 5:
Report all of your staff that are eligible as well as those you believe should receive a device, as the State will look at all final staff totals and may be able to adjust the guidelines to include more teachers than the guidelines currently state. In addition, schools may choose to purchase additional staff seats at the cost indicated on the form.
edited 8/15/06 — All certified teachers who teach 7th and/or 8th grade students who were submitted by the July 7 deadline were allocated an MLTI device.
Question 6:
I did not report all of my teachers on the MLTI Staff Roster Spreadsheet. I have teachers who qualify for a device, how do I get more staff devices?
Answer 6:
The Department cannot order more devices at this time. The MLTI Project Team will attempt to allocated available devices to eligible staff if any exist. Schools with additional staff must resubmit the MLTI Staff Roster Spreadsheet. Schools should include only additional staff (not those already submitted). The MLTI Staff Spreadsheet must be emailed to Jeff Mao, jeff.mao@maine.gov. Any unallocated devices will be assigned to students first.
Question 7:
Our school enrollment is larger than expected. How do we get more student devices?
Answer 7: edited 8/23/06
If your school requires additional devices for students, please email mlti.project@maine.gov. Please provide the following information:
- School Name
- School MEDMS ID
- Total Number of Students enrolled in grades 7-8
- Total Number of devices currently assigned to Faculty, Staff, and Students (this information is displayed in the Asset Manager)
Larger schools ( >100) were allocated additional devices beyond what was reported to the MLTI Project team in anticipation of possible growth. If your enrollment is as reported or smaller, the MLTI Project team may request that you return the additional devices the the Department or transfer them to a school with larger than expected enrollment.
Schools should also make sure that they deploy staff devices only to those staff who were approved to have a device. Lists were sent via US Mail. If your school needs another copy, please contact the MLTI Project office, mlti.project@maine.gov.
Question 8:
The new devices have arrived at my school. How do I get the new passwords?
Answer 8:
The Deplolyment Contact, as listed on your schools Device Order Form, must call the Apple Project Office in order to obtain the new passwords, (207) 688-4501.
Question 9:
Do I have to reimage the new devices?
Answer 9:
No. The devices will ship to your school pre-imaged with the new MLTI image. At a minimum, schools should change the administrator password on every laptop before they are deployed to a teacher or student. Schools may use the Apple Remote Desktop software to modify the administator password to a localized password on mulitple devices simultaneously. For help with this process, please see the Tech Lead FAQ.
Question 10:
Where is the MLTI Asset Manager? How do I login?
Answer 10:
The MLTI Asset Manager can be found at http://assets.mlti.org. Default logins were sent via U.S. Mail to each school. If your school cannot locate the mailing, please contact the Apple Project Office, (207) 688-4501
Question 11:
Where can I download new packages and scripts to help me install software and make local configuration changes?
Answer 11:
The new "TC Conferences" are under construction, but an interim solution is available here. Also, please see the Tech Lead FAQs.
Question 12:
When will the laptop cases ship? Are the same as the old ones?
Answer 12:
Expected shipping for bags is mid-September. A small group of schools have received bags already but most schools should not expect to receive shipment of the bags until September. We are working to get them as early as possible. The bags are not the same as the last deployment. They are similar, but now they include an integrated pocket for the charger and cable. For a description of the bag, please see Brenthaven's web site listing for the bag.
Question 13:
Can I charge the laptop in the new Brenthaven Sleeve?
Answer 13:
NO! The laptop should never be charged in the Brenthaven Sleeve. When the laptop is charged, it should be in a well-ventilated space. The Sleeves are designed to hold the laptop in the sleeve rather tightly in order to help prevent the laptop from falling out of the sleeve. It does not provide any ventilation. Charging in the sleeve or any other non-ventilated space creates too much heat, and it can lead to hardware failures. Please make sure that all staff and students are aware of this so that laptops are not damaged by improper charging!
Question 14:
We received a box of Tech Tools CDs from Apple. What are they for?
Answer 14:
The Tech Tools CDs were shipped as a normal procedure since the Apple MLTI iBooks are covered by the Applecare Protection Plan. However, the CDs should not be used on MLTI laptops.
Question 15:
My school ordered additional Buffer Pool units. Where are they?
Answer 15:
The entire Buffer Pool is stored and managed at the MLTI Local Depot in Westbrook, ME. All Buffer Pool units purchased by schools are stored at the MLTI Local Depot until requested for in exchange for a broken unit or as replacement for a lost/stolen unit. When Buffer Requests are made, the Department will first issue devices allocated and provided by the Department. When Department allocations are used up at a school, then locally purchased devices will be issued.
Question 16:
I have a Brenthaven Sleeve that has failed. How do I get it replaced?
Answer 16:
To get replacement Brenthaven sleeves due to manufacturer's defect, please call 800-803-7225 between 8am and 4pm PST. Please be prepared to provide your school's address and the number of bags with issues.
Question 17:
What is the format for the bulk upload file for creating email/Studywiz accounts?
Answer 17:
Schools must obtain the bulk upload file from MEDMS. In each SAU at least one MEDMS login will allow an SAU to download the necessary file that is already formatted and prepared to the exact specifications needed for upload. To download the file, schools should have their MEDMS administrator login to MEDMS, then select "Download Data" on the first drop down menu then click Go. Then select "Student Enrollments" from the second drop down menu then click Go. On the Download Data screen, select "7th and 8th Grade Students for MLTI" from the "Select a file to Download" drop down menu.
The file that is downloaded will be named "MEDMS_StudentDownload.xls". Do not open/edit/modify the file. Simply upload it using the interface in the MLTI Asset Manager.
