Dear Teacher Leader
In addition to being administered slightly later than in previous years, this year?s MLTI fall student survey is slightly different than in the past. Instead of collecting a broad spectrum of data about student use, this year?s fall survey is focused on collecting
information about students? ability to access, evaluate, and synthesize information found on the Internet, an important 21st Century skill. A link to the survey can be found on the following webpage: http://www.usm.maine.edu/cepare/surveys.htm. Students should be instructed to visit this link, click on the "MLTI Student Survey ? Fall 2008?, and complete the survey. The password to complete the survey is fall08. The deadline to complete the survey is Wednesday, November 26, 2008.

Should you have any problems with the survey or have questions, please
email cepare at usm.maine.edu or call Sarah Wintle at (207) 780-5046.

Thank you for taking the time to provide this important feedback to
MLTI researchers and evaluators. For Fall 2008, there will be no
teacher survey administered.

Dear MLTI Schools,

As you are aware, each year the MLTI updates and revises the software
and configurations (aka the image) on the MLTI devices. This process
takes over half of the year to prepare, engineer, and test before it
is delivered to your schools. The Department is seeking feedback on
the software image so that we can work with Apple to design the next
iteration of the "MLTI Image".

There are two avenues for providing feedback. The Studywiz "207
Faculty Center" has a discussion activity for any teacher user to
submit thoughts and suggestions in the Help Desk folder. This
discussion item will remain live through the month of November.
Additionally, the Department is hosting three 90 minute conference
calls to gather feedback and ideas about the software image. Those
calls will be held on the following dates:

November 13, Thursday, 10:30 am to 12 pm
November 13, Thursday, 3 pm to 4:30 pm
November 14, Friday, 9 am to 10:30 am

To participate in the call, please call:

1-877-760-2043
Participant code: 939403

This year there is a new program on all 7th and 8th grade laptops
called Ecobeaker Maine Explorer. (It looks like a beaker with ME on
it). Check out your applications folder.
This program has been designed expressly for the MLTI program by a
dedicated group that includes 23 Maine middle school teachers. Each
"lab" within the program visits (virtually) a different habitat in
Maine and uses that habitat to explore ecological concepts such as
runoff, succession, keystone predators, invasive species and the "edge
effect". Plus there is a 6th unit that lets students see "under the
hood" and get their first glimpse at computer programing. Each lab is
designed to take just one to two weeks of instructional time.
Ecobeaker comes with Noteshare notebooks with complete lesson plans,
handouts and assessments, all aligned with the new MLRs. Each lab has
a specially designed field exercise that brings students outdoors.
This fall at the MLTI subject area conferences, the teachers who have
helped design this program will be training others. (See http://www.maine.gov/mlti/events/content/index.htm
). This is a great opportunity to learn from teachers who have been
using this program in their classrooms for the past three years.
EcoscienceWorks will pay $50 towards a substitute for your day. By
attending you will be entered into a drawing for an ipod shuffle. One
will be given away at each MLTI content meeting for EcoscienceWorks.
Plus for the first 100 teachers who use one of the labs and the
programming component (Program a Bunny) in their classroom, there is a
$100 incentive.
Hope to see you all at one content meeting. Details regarding
substitute reimbursement will be provided at the meeting.

Thank you, The MLTI Team

Dear MLTI Leadership Teams, brbrThank you for your continued support of the work being done in your brschool to leverage technology to support all students. Your leadership brremains foundational to the success of the Maine Learning Technology brInitiative. In recognition of the importance of the contribution of bryour MLTI Teacher Leader, the Department is pleased to continue to brprovide a $1,000 stipend to the MLTI Teacher Leader this school year, brwhich will be paid in a single payment in spring 2009.brbrThe work completed last year, particularly the school notebooks, has brbeen instrumental to our planning. The MLTI Fall Meeting is a direct brresult of our review of those notebooks. Having the opportunity to brview a snapshot of the huge variety of ways that Maine teachers are brusing technology in support of their teaching and of student learning bris exciting.brbrThe main role of the MLTI Teacher Leader is to continue being the brvoice of the faculty as schools continue to move forward and learn brabout how to most effectively leverage the tools and opportunities brthat technology offers. This year's MLTI Teacher Leader stipend brrequirements are detailed on the Teacher Leader Information Sheet. brPlease take time to review these requirements with your Leadership team.brbrPlease take careful note of the required forms and deadlines detailed bron the documents, which can be found online at http://www.maine.gov/mlti/forms/index.htm or in Studywiz (207 HS MS Teacher Leaders).brbrThank You,brbrJeff Maobr

Dear MLTI Schools, brbrThe Department is changing the policy for account allocations for the brStudywiz online virtual learning environment. Based on feedback from brschools and utilization data, accounts allocated to a school will no brlonger be limited to the number of MLTI devices at the school. brOverall, the system will allow approximately 40,000 users. Until the brtotal number of accounts in use exceeds 35,000 users, schools may brcreate accounts for students, teachers, or staff as necessary for brsuccessful implementation of the system. This includes generating braccounts for high school students or elementary students and staff. brThis change is effective immediately.brbrFor more information about Studywiz, email, and MLTI Backup accounts, brplease see http://www.maine.gov/mlti/portals/studywiz/ or contact MLTI brProject Manager, Steve Vose, steve.vose at maine.gov, (207) 624-6777.
The following information is being sent on behalf of MAMLE.brbrThank youbrThe MLTI Teambrbr===========brbrTo: MLTI PrincipalsbrFrom: MAMLEbrRE: Middle Level Leadership Team Professional Development Series br2008-2009brbrThere's still time to provide your leadership team with the bropportunity to participate in this outstanding professional brdevelopment series. We hope you'll join your colleagues from across brthe state!brbrHere are some answers to questions that may not have been addressed in brearlier information.brbrQ: Why is the October 22nd Leadership PD session at Sugarloaf?brA: This will bring leadership teams from all over Maine together and bruse our grant funding to subsidize up to four Leadership Team PD brattendees from each school to register for the MAMLE Annual conference brat 1/2 price. Two for one or four for two!brbrQ: Why does this series consist of so many sessions?brA: Research and our 3 year CSR experience clearly indicates that one brshot deals do not work. This makes sense based on what we know about brteaching and learning. Effective learning and quality professional brdevelopment must be sustained over a period of time.brbrQ: It's not good for teachers to miss so many days of instructional brtime with students. How can we address this issue?brA: Although there should be a constant core of the leadership team in brattendance, it is perfectly fine to rotate other members of the team brin to the sessions throughout the year. When doing this it will be brimportant that good communication is established between those in brattendance and those who are not.brbrQ: Our school is very small and the leadership team is fewer than the brrequired minimum. What can we do?brA: If your team is smaller than 4 people please contact Jill Spencer brat spencerj51 at yahoo.com and we'll figure out what can be done.brbrQ: If we just can't justify attending all nine sessions is that a deal brbreaker?brA: If this is a major issue for your leadership team please contact brChris Toy at christoy.net at gmail.combrbrWe're looking forward to a great series!brbrHope to see you in September.brbrJill SpencerbrChris ToybrWally Alexander

This message is being sent to you on behalf of Maine State Libraries. brbrPlease direct all questions to the contact information at the bottom of this message.brbr******************************************************************brbrTime to post E-Rate Form 470br brIf your library or school applies for E-Rate discounts for telephone services (local, long distance, cellular, etc.) or other E-Rate eligible services, it is now time to prepare and post the Form 470. You may fill out the Form 470 online at: http://www.sl.universalservice.org/menu.aspbr brThe Form 470 is a service request form which informs vendors that you want bids for services. It must be posted at the USAC/SLD website for at least 28 days before you can go ahead and select a phone company (or other vendor) and continue with the E-rate process by completing the next required form, Form 471. Do not sign a contract for services before the 28 day period is over!br brThis year the Form 471 must be completed by February 7th, 2008 which means January 10th is the last day you can complete a Form 470.br brPlease do not wait until the last minute! brbrWe encourage you to file the Form 470 prior to the December holidays to allow plenty of time to evaluate any bids and get the Form 471 done. brbrWe also recommend that you use wording from the eligible services list when filling out all E-rate forms. The list is available in PDF format at: http://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/edocs_public/attachmatch/FCC-07-182A2.pdfbrbrTechnology Plan Reminder: brIf you get your Internet through MSLN, do E-Rate for ATM, or apply for any Priority 2 services, and your current technology plan does not cover the 12 months of Funding Year 2008 (July 1, 2008 - June 2009), a technology plan must be developed prior to the submission of the Form 470. New plans will need to be approved prior to the start of services (July 1, 2008). Most schools and libraries do need a technology plan.brbrTraining Will Be Offered via ATM, Webinars, Conference Calls:brWe will be offering training to anyone who may want to apply for E-rate discounts for the first time or who just wants a refresher. Training will be done via a series of webinars (live and archived) and ATM sessions. We will also schedule an introductory and informational conference call session during the first week in December. We will post times and dates of training in the next few days. brbrSign Up for the New Maine E-rate Listserv: brAlthough we will continue to post reminders to MELIBS, MEINFO, ACTEM and MSLNTC, the ERATE-MAINE listserv will offer additional notices and information about E-Rate. You may subscribe to the ERATE-MAINE listserv at the Maine State Library/Department of Education E-Rate website: http://www.maine.gov/msl/erate/ br brIf you need more information on E-Rate forms and deadlines, please email your questions to: brbrJanet McKenney, Public Library and MSLN E-rate Coordinator, janet.mckenney at maine.gov brbrORbrbrSylvia K.
Dear MLTI Schools,brWe are aware that many schools have reported enrollment numbers that brexceed the number of available MLTI devices at their schools. We have brbeen working to resolve these issues. Devices are bring shipped now to brschools that reported needs (*see list at the end of this message). brHopefully we have not missed anyone.brbrTo better understand the needs, we have extracted from MEDMS the brOctober enrollment figures as reported by your school and compared brthem to the Asset Manager. As we expected, there are many schools on brthe lists which have a need larger than their asset pool. However, brwe also have a significant number of schools, which based on this brsimple numerical comparison, show a huge number of unallocated brdevices. There are a few schools for which no MEDMS data was bravailable, so the number of unallocated devices is grossly inflated. brIf your school's data is incomplete please report the missing data brelements to the MLTI Project team.

NetLogo Initiation WorkshopbrWith Dr. Uri Wilensky, Ph.D., Creator of NetLogobrbrThe Tremont School, Mt. Desert IslandbrWednesday, July 18, 2007brbrIn 2007 many professional creators of knowledge use computer-based modeling as an essential tool. Now school children can too, through the NetLogo modeling environment. NetLogo is not just another piece of educational software, but an accessible entryway into the world of computer-based modeling.br brYou can think of NetLogo models as super-manipulatives in social studies, science, and mathematics. Unlike static cardboard models, the elements of an agent-based model take on a life of their own and interact with one another and the environment. The players or agents may be birds trying to find and eat butterflies in a field of flowers; farmers grazing their sheep on a common field; molecules of water, acid, or base; or muscle fibers in a body. The possibilities are enormous!br brNetLogo is accessible to fifth grade students and is equally useful through high school and beyond.
Asset Redistribution for Summer 2007brbrThe MLTI Project Team and Apple Project Team will be working together this summer to redistribute MLTI 7th and 8th grade laptops based on anticipated 2007-08 student enrollments. This redistribution process will begin on June 11, 2007 and will continue throughout the summer until all laptop transfers are complete. Laptop transfers will fall into three possible scenarios:brbr1. Schools that will receive additional devices to cover predicted increasing student enrollments;br2. Schools that will return additional devices to cover predicted decreasing student enrollments; andbr3.
We are writing to remind everyone to register their students for the 4thbrAnnual MLTI Student Tech Team Day at the University of Maine Orono on Junebr1, 2007. This year's theme is M-STEM: Maine Learners, Science, Technology,brEngineering, and Mathematics.brbrWe are adding more sessions daily, and when you visit our web site, you canbrsee that this is going to be another great learning opportunity! Please bebrsure to register yourself and your students by using the registration linkbrat this web site: brbra href=http://www.mainelearns.org/studentconference/conf07http://www.mainelearns.org/studentconference/conf07/abrbrShould you have any questions, please contact Jim Moulton at:brjim at jimmoulton.orgbrbrHere are a few samples of the kinds of sessions we have planned:brbrGarageBand is Easier Than You Think: An overview of making your own musicbrwith Apple's GarageBand - In this music-filled session, we'll learn how tobruse GarageBand to create music completely from scratch. We'll usebrGarageBand's thousands of built-in sounds and loops - and augment thembrwith other instruments such as a guitar or MIDI keyboard. Whether you are abrmusician or someone who can barely tune a radio, you'll discover how easybr(and fun) it is to make professional sounding songs, music soundtracksbr(think movies, podcasts, etc!) and even your very own CDs. Making music hasbrnever been more simple!brbrOh My Goodness! I Blew up the Screen!: This session will explore highbrresolution visualization using tiled displays. Students will generate largebrimages (the current idea is fractals, but may be something else) based onbrinquiry-based exploration. Students will work in teams to not only createbrthe images, but also to view them. Each student's laptop will be used tobrdisplay a piece of the overall image, allowing both a larger display andbrhigher resolution than could be attained with a single laptop.brbrNoteShare: Way Beyond The Basics: OK... You're using NoteShare in yourbrschool, but are you really using it in all the ways possible??? We doubtbrit... Come to this session and learn at least a dozen amazing thingsbrNoteShare can do that you will be able to show your teachers and classmates.brbrThank you for your continued participation in the MLTI Project!brbrMaine Learning Technology InitiativebrState of Maine Department of Educationbr23 State House Station, Augusta, ME 04333brMlti.project at maine.gov

Based on feedback from a number of schools, for products like Photoshop and Photoshop Elements, you may not be successful. In this case, please forward your Adobe case number and any other relevant information to jeff Mao, jeff.mao at maine.gov. We will assemble your case numbers and escalate with Adobe to attempt to resolve the issue. For Adobe Acrobat Reader, schools have reported success with installation and use provided the software is installed manually from the admin login, and the application is run once as the admin user. Once completed, the teacher and student user are able to utilize the software. Thank You, MLTI Project Team

If you have asbestos anywhere in your school, even if you think it will not affect the wireless networks, please mark that asbestos is present when completing the Building Information section of the school readiness checklists in the asset manager. If your information has already been approved and you cannot adjust your checklist, please send an email to mlti-wireless at group.apple.com. Be sure to include your school code. Notifying Apple of asbestos in advance will greatly increase the speed at which your network is installed. If the wiring team discovers asbestos, they will cease work immediately until they are able to determine how to proceed. Addressing the issue up front will allow us to keep your network update on schedule. All schools, even those without asbestos, should be prepared to provide your Asbestos Survey paperwork to the wiring team when they arrive to install your wireless networks. If you do not provide this paperwork, the wiring may not occur and your network will be delayed. Thank you for your cooperation! MLTI Project Team

Seymour Papert, our visionary for MLTI, was in a terrible accident this week. The Boston Globe reports: December 7, 2006 Seymour Papert, a professor emeritus at MIT who is one of the pioneers of artificial intelligence and an authority on how computers can help children learn, was seriously injured after being struck by a motorbike in Hanoi, where he was attending a conference. The accident on Tuesday left Papert, 78, in a coma. He underwent brain surgery at French Hospital, hospital officials said. He was struck while crossing a street near his hotel, Hoang Xuan Lan of Hanoi Technology University, told the Associated Press. The university is hosting the conference. A native of South Africa, Papert worked with renowned researcher Jean Piaget and helped develop the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with Marvin Minsky. Their book, Perceptrons, is considered one of the seminal works on the topic. Papert also helped create Logo, a programming language used to teach computer science. We will keep you informed.
NETLOGO WORKSHOP PRESENTED BY: Max Crain (Tremont Pemetic Schools, Mt. Desert Island); Seymour Papert and Jim Bonnes (Liberty School, Blue Hill, ME) DATE/TIME: October 27th, 2006, 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM (Please bring your own lunch) LOCATION: Liberty School, 8 Liberty Lane, Blue Hill, ME, Phone: 207-374-2886, Web: http://www.liberty-school.org SUMMARY: The kinds of modeling that NetLogo supports are becoming quite a force in the scientific world. NetLogo is capable of providing new and significant opportunities to think and learn in school. The installation on MLTI laptops should be a boost, but we will still need to put much attention into developing a Logo/NetLogo community in Maine schools. As one of the Logo family of computer languages, NetLogo programming is designed to have a low threshold but a high ceiling. Max Crain has worked with NetLogo and children as young as 10 years old. This software is also being used actively by researchers. This workshop is open to educators from Grades 5-12.

Dear MLTI Schools, brbrThank you for entering data into the MLTI Asset Manager (http://assets.mlti.org). Updated contact information helps us distribute important program information and teacher professional development opportunities to you. The network and building information is necessary for the wireless network upgrades. Site visits for the network upgrades have already begun and will continue as school data sets are entered and approved.brbrAt this time, some schools have incomplete data. We would like to encourage all schools to get this data entered as soon as possible. If you are unsure whether or not you have entered data, please follow the Network Installation Status link in the Asset Manager. This screen will show if you have missed a section completely. For sections that show that you have entered data, but it is not yet approved, please review that section to ensure you did not leave parts blank. Both the Apple team and the MLTI Project team is reviewing this data as quickly as we can, so it may take time before completed sections are approved. If sections appear complete, do not be alarmed. Your Deployment Contact will be notified if we havebrquestions about the data.brbrWhen completing the Room Approvals section, please only list those rooms which are used for 7th and 8th grade academic use. Do not list rooms more than once if it is used by more than one teacher. Duplications slow the approval process.brbrAll schools should complete all Building Information, Network Information, and Room Approvals information by October 31, 2006. Contact information should entered no later than September 29, 2006.brbrThank you,brMLTI Staff

Your leadership team will then bring the new learning back to school and share it in your professional learning community through mini-workshops, team meetings, or whatever format works best for your teachers. Small schools are encouraged to collaborate with other schools within their districts and include the library media specialist. These logins are Student logins and are, by brdefault, in the form of:brbrusername: tcxxxxbrpassword: tcxxxxbrbrwhere xxxx is the 4 digit MEDMS School ID. Once logged in, MLTI Tech brLeads should change their password. That's nearly 38,000 laptops shipped from China (not Maine!) to Maine (including China). As we prepare for the new year, there will be many questions about the management and policies for the new deployment. We are working on a new MLTI Policy Manual now. In the meantime, we are also maintaining Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) pages on our web site. Please refer to these pages before calling or emailing the MLTI Project team.

Dear MLTI Schools, brbrThe Project Team would like to thank all of the schools for submitting their paperwork on time under a tight deadline. Your quick responses made our work easier. After reviewing device orders and staff needs, the Department is happy to say that we will be able to provide MLTI laptop devices to all certified 7th/8th grade teachers identified by schools. This means that teachers submitted on the MLTI Staff Roster Spreadsheets who were identified as certified and had FTE with 7/8 graders less than 50% will receive an MLTI device. Final approved staff lists will be mailed to schools soon.
