Session Descriptions
EcoScience (MS only - HS MacBooks don't have ME Explorer)
There's a new application on the 2008 MLTI laptop image - ME Explorer. Take a second to browse through your applications to find it. It's an inquiry-based ecology investigation especially produced for Maine students and MLTI, with lesson plans, field studies, programming, and computer activities based on ecological models. Participants will be introduced to the modules and have some hands on experience with well designed simulations. Maine teachers who advised the development and field tested the units will be on hand to guide you through the process. Bring your re-imaged laptops!
Integrating Technology in the Writing Process
Research shows that student writing improves when students use computers for all steps of the writing process, from pre-writing activities through publication. Participants in this session will explore strategies, ideas and resources for digital writing as they take a piece of their own writing through each stage of the process. They will experience brainstorming, researching and organizing ideas; drafting, revising and redrafting; giving and getting feedback; editing; and publishing. This session is appropriate for middle and high school teachers.
Mathematics with Technology* (Kennebec, Hancock & Penquis Regions)
Mathematics with Technology provides the opportunity to engage with mathematics technology resources that support teaching and learning. Interactive web-based applets and Open Educational Resources, including GeoGebra, will be explored. Guided collaborative hands-on activities will model purposeful integration of the technology. Instructional strategies will support concept development for all learners and meet teaching and learning standards for mathematics and technology. This session is appropriate for middle and high school Math teachers.
Technology in the Math Classroom* (York/Cumberland, Western, Midcoast) These sessions of Technology in the Math Classroom vary slightly from the Math sessions above in that they will have a greater emphasis on graphing tools.
Technology in the Math Classroom provides an opportunity to investigate how computer technology can enhance the content you are already teaching. Grapher and spreadsheet-based graphing tools will be explored. Open Educational Resources such as GeoGebra and the NLVM tools will also be introduced. A major focus will be planning technology-based learning to meet common standards. Activities will be appropriate for whole-class instruction or one-computer-per-student instruction and for high school or middle school math content. This session is appropriate for middle and high school teachers.
* We are working with our facilitators to schedule Math sessions in the remaining regions.
NoteShare in the Classroom
Looking for an easy way to integrate technology into the curriculum painlessly? This one-day session will provide participants with the foundation for creating, publishing, sharing, and managing media-rich educational content using NoteShare. NoteShare helps teachers manage and distribute classroom materials, work with digital text, organize student work and portfolios and promote 21st century skills, including the important skill of collaboration. Participants will be guided step by step in creating notebooks that they can put to use in their classrooms,
Podcasting for You and your Students
This workshop will present the fundamentals of planning, creating, and managing digital media files used to deliver a podcast. Participants will explore the rich collection of curriculum-related podcasts available for free on the internet, subscribe to appropriate ones, and create a collection in iTunes. Participants will then learn to write a script, and record, edit, and produce their own enhanced podcast for classroom use. Throughout the workshop, participants discuss the role of podcasting in education and how to use the power of the ubiquitous media players (iPods) as a teaching and learning tool to engage learners with diverse learning styles.
Visualizing Data with GIS
GIS applications offer the user a wide choice of representation of data and information, and can impact viewers in surprising ways. Learn how to use the GIS applications on the MLTI image, My World and Google Earth, to build powerful graphic content for science and social studies classes, and how to get students creating wonderful visual elements for their projects.
