MLTI is excited to announce a new partnership with Common Sense Media, a national nonprofitorganization that helps families and educators teach kids how to be safe and smart in today’s media driven world. We are working together tooffer elementary and middle schools the opportunity to participate in an innovative parent media education and Internet safety pilot program during the 2009-2010 school year.
We know that parent involvement is critical to youth development, improved student achievement, and to successfully growing and improving our state-wide technology initiatives, and this partnership offers us an exciting opportunity to engage parents even more deeply in the our technology programs.
The pilot is based on the comprehensive Common Sense Schools Program, which provides schools easy-to-use resources and straight-forward information to help them engage parents and educators in an ongoing dialogue about the importance of digital citizenship. Common Sense takes a balanced approach to media education and Internet safety, and addresses both the challenges and opportunities that digital media creates for kids.
The program consists of materials organized by grade and topic, and includes resources such as tip sheets, surveys, discussion guides, videos, and other interactive family activities focused on specific topics such as: social networking, virtual worlds, commercialism, cell phones, cyberbullying, and the impact of media on kids’ healthy development.
Although any school can sign-up now for the program and access the materials online for free,
schools participating in the pilot (see list on right) will receive the following additional support at no-cost:
-In-person trainings
-Specialized online webinars
-Hard copy binder of all the print materials, which includes a DVD with all videos and a CD with soft copies of the materials for your easy printing and distribution
-Evaluation services (online parent and student survey creation and data compilation)
In return, pilot schools must commit to implementing the program during the 2009-2010 school
year and engaging in certain activities using the Common Sense materials, including:
-Identifying a parent and faculty team (2-4 persons) to lead the program at your school -Participating in either an in-person training or webinar
-Conducting a pre-and-post survey of parent attitudes and behaviors toward media (note that the data will be analyzed and compiled into a report for each participating school by Common Sense Media).
