Using the Search Results Page

The results of your query will show ten hits at a time. The first item for each hit is underlined and consists of the case name and any other information contained in the title. If you click on the title, you will go directly to that case. The so-called abstract of the case is simply the first couple of lines of text in the document. The next item listed is the URL address of the decision. Again, if you click on that you will jump to that decision. (Note--The date and time listed under that link is the date the decision was placed on our server, not the date it was issued.)

At the bottom of each result are two icons which allow you to see where the terms matching your query are located in that decision. Summary will show you the two or three lines of text surrounding the matching terms from your query. This can give you an immediate sense of whether your search term has led you to useful decisions. Full shows the matched text hightlighted within the complete document, albeit an unformatted version. Although it is difficult to read, you can move from one hit to the next very easily in this format. Both the summary and full views are helpful in their own way.

If you are doing a significant amount of research, it may be helpful to print out your search results. The system will only show you ten results per page, so you must print out each set of ten separately.
