Lightning Preparedness and Safety
If your hair stands on end you are about to be struck by lightning. With feet together immediately get into a protective crouch position with heels raised off the ground. With all of your weight resting on the balls of your feet you have the least possible contact with the ground and you have decreased your height above ground significantly. This will reduce your risk of being struck but will not eliminate it.
Maine has the 8th highest per capita lightning casualties rate in the US.
When thunder is heard sporting events should be terminated. Players and spectators should move to safe locations and remain there for at least 30 minutes after the storm has passed. Most people are struck as a storm approaches or leaves an area. Athletic directors and teachers should carry possible NOAA weather radios when engaged in out door activities a car or bus can provide good shelter. Keep windows rolled up and do not touch metal objects.
If you are inside do not talk on the phone, touch water faucets, do dishes, laundry, or stay in your garage. Many have been struck while engaged in these activities.
Hikers and campers should carry portable NOAA weather radios for early warning of approaching weather. If a vehicle or other suitable shelter is not available avoid being near taller trees, very open spaces and metal objects. In some circumstances the best you may be able to do is a protective crouch.
