Lightning Safety Awareness Week
AUGUSTA, MAINE -- The Maine Emergency Management Agency in support of the National Weather Service urges all citizens to learn more about how to protect themselves from Lightning. Lightning is a leading cause of storm-related fatalities in the United States. It is second only to floods and is more dangerous than either tornadoes or hurricanes.
Governor King has declared this week Lightning Safety Awareness Week. In doing so, he noted that Maine's casualty rate is disproportionately high based on the number of lightning strikes. The vast majority of these casualties can be prevented if proper preventative actions are taken. The National Weather Service has developed a series of public information statements regarding lightning and posted them on the Internet. They can be found at: http://www.nws.noaa.gov/er/gyx/lightning_safety.htm or

By learning more about the danger of lightning and by taking appropriate actions to minimize the risk of lightning deaths and injuries, Maine citizens and tourists can enjoy the summer safely.
