“Crank Up” Holiday Gift Ideas

AUGUSTA, MAINE – At your wit’s end for the gadget-lover on your holiday gift list? Maine’s County Emergency Management Directors say you can “Crank up” that love for gadgets and make your family a little safer at the same time. Many handy emergency items, from the humble flashlight to cell-phone chargers, are now available in crank-up models that don’t need batteries.

“Crank up” these gift ideas:

  • NOAA Weather Radio*. NOAA Weather Radios broadcast a continuous stream of official Weather Service warnings, watches, forecasts and other hazard information 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Portable models are great for the gadget-loving outdoorsman. Crank-up (or battery-powered) models will give constant information during a power outage. There are add-on accessories available for the deaf and hearing impaired such as pillow vibrators, bed shakers, and strobe lights.
  • That old stand-by, the portable radio, is now available with a twist – or rather a crank. Many crank radios are available with a weather band, so that they can get NOAA Weather broadcasts as well as your favorite station.
  • Crank cell phone charger: Get one for the home when the power goes out, and one for the car. You’ll always have a charge when you need to make that emergency call.
  • Crank flashlight: Imagine a flashlight that doesn’t need batteries. Crank it up and let your light shine!
