MAINE EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY
2009 CERT Jamboree Trains and Tests Volunteers
September 18, 2009
More than 70 Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), Community Animal Response Team (CART), Amateur Radio Emergency Services (EMCOMM/ARES), and Search and Rescue (SAR) members gathered September 18-20 for the 2009 CERT Jamboree. This year, the Jamboree was held in Hancock County at the Schoodic Education and Research Center locater in Winter Harbor.
Friday night consisted of registration and a group team building around a bon fire. Saturday and Sunday consisted of several courses being taught. The courses taught were American Heart Association CPR/First Aid, American Red Cross Shelter Operations Course, Communications Demonstrations, Search and Rescue block courses, American Red Cross Pet CPR/First Aid, and a Pet Sheltering Course. The 2 day CERT course was also held both days, which is 9 modules long.
Instructional Staff consisted of Park Rangers from Acadia National Park, Maine Warden Service, Maine Emergency Management Staff, Hancock County Emergency Management Staff, American Red Cross, Oxford County Emergency Management Agency, Kennebec County Emergency Management Agency, Somerset County Emergency Management Agency, Gouldsboro/Winter Harbor Emergency Management Agency, Winter Harbor Fire Department, and The Humane Society of the United States.
The courses taught throughout the 2 days were a build up to a full scale exercise during the afternoon on Sunday. The exercise simulated a hurricane in which knocked out much of the communications systems which required our EMCOMM/ARES team to establish communications. A pet shelter was needed as there were several stray animals. The CERT’s set up a shelter for people to stay in and the search and rescue teams had lost hikers in the woods and needed to search a collapsed structure for survivors. The evaluations from the participants indicated a positive 2 days, which was planned by the Hancock County Emergency Management Agency.
Maine Emergency Management Agency recognizes that volunteers are important to our state, especially in a time of disaster. MEMA sponsored this event though Citizencorps Grant Funds.
Several photos have been uploaded to MEMA's page on Facebook.
