MEMA Welcomes New Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service (RACES) Director

July 29, 2008

MEMA has appointed Bill Akins (NT1N) as the Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service (RACES) Director for the State of Maine. Bill succeeds Rod Scribner in this important volunteer position.

Bill currently works full time for Maine Department of Transportation in the Office of Legal Services and volunteers extensively in Amateur Radio events. He brings to the position a great background and knowledge in many communication methods. His experience and leadership roles in the Maine American Radio Relay League (ARRL) as a District Emergency Coordinator make him a excellent fit for this liaison role between State emergency operations and the HAM radio community.

MEMA recruited statewide for candidates to fill the volunteer position of RACES Coordinator. Bill was selected by the Communication Manager at MEMA, an EMA County Director, the outgoing RACES Director and the State ARRL Section Emergency Coordinator. Bill’s first task will to be to prepare MEMA to participate in this years Simulated Emergency Test (SET) in October.
