Monetary Donations the Best Way to Assist Tsunami Victims
December 29, 2004
AUGUSTA, MAINE — The Maine Emergency Management Agency reminds Mainers that monetary donations are the best way to aid the millions of tsunami survivors in Asia.
“When we see a disaster of such shattering proportions, we have an instant desire to help,” said MEMA Director Art Cleaves. “Although it may seem impersonal, a cash donation is absolutely the best way to do so.”
Cash donations will allow relief agencies to keep up with changing disaster needs by purchasing the type and amount of supplies that are the most urgently needed at the moment. Also, purchases will be made as close to the disaster area as possible, which helps support the economies of the affected countries.
Cleaves said there are many relief agencies on the ground in Asia which can take donations. A full list of these agencies, as well as their contact information, can be found on the web site of the US Agency for International Development (USAID) at http://www.usaid.gov.
Among the agencies assisting are the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army. Donations may be made to these agencies through a local chapter, their web sites or by phone.
