Information for School Administrators: Drinking Water Systems
April 18, 2007
The Maine Drinking Water Program has issued the following information for School Administrators: If flooding has occurred at a school, please determine if flood waters have impacted the drinking water system. Please keep the Drinking Water Program informed of flooded wells and water treatment facilities. If a well goes under water, please assume the well to be contaminated. Shut the well down (if possible) and/or place a boil water order on until the well is disinfected and the water is tested appropriately. If a water line washes-out, a boil water order is required if the water pressure drops to zero or negative pressure. The Maine Drinking Water Program can be reached M-F from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM at 287-2070. The 24 hr. emergency phone number for the Drinking Water Program is 207-557-4214. Additional information on wells inundated by flooding is located at the following web-link: http://www.maine.gov/dhhs/eng/water/Templates/FloodEmergency.htm
