Abstract:
LakeDpth consolidates several sources of lake depth sample information. Each point indicates the depth of the lake at that location, along with the surface elevation of the lake. The data can be used to map the lake beds or compute lake volumes.
The data sources used in this layer differ in their accuracy and are coded so the user can relate a certain level of confidence to each point. Data sources include points digitized off Dept. of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife lake depth maps and elevations determined by combination GPS/depthfinder equipment.
Some lakes will have points from multiple sources. Users should consult the feature-level metadata fields to determine which points are appropriate for their work and select them out using a definition query.
Purpose:
To provide data for computation of lake volume and to model lake beds in 3-D. Such data are widely used in managing fish and water quality.

University of Maine Farmington - Quebec Labrador Foundation GIS student interns scanned and geo-referenced Maine Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Lake Depth maps using the most up-to-date aerial photos. Shapefiles were created from the digitized lake points and were periodically submitted to Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). DEP staff compiled the shapefiles and added additional lake points into a personal geodatabase in April 2008. Fields were added to match the existing MEGIS Lake Depths feature class. These fields were populated with the appropriate feature level metadata.

There are 3 measurements recorded in these data: location - the xy coordinate of the point z - the depth of the sample at the point surface - either the surface elevation of the point, or an offset from mean water level
The depth can be measured in either meters or feet, but when entered, both units should be calculated. Depth is always a positive measurement from the lake surface.
Surface measurements should be EITHER the actual surface elevation (as measured from USGS map, or known lake levels at dam or measuring station, or by surveying) OR an offset measurement from mean lake level (as measured from water lines on rocks, etc.). There should NOT be any points which have both an elevation and an offset - if the mean lake elevation is known and an offset is measured, than the current lake elevation should be recorded.
