SECTION 503 - REINFORCING STEEL

503.06 Placing & Fastening...reinforcing steel shall be anchored into drilled holes. Anchoring material shall be a prequalified type 3 anchoring material.

SECTION 523 - BEARINGS

523.09.1 Anchor Rods ...anchor rods shall be accurately set with an approved two part high-strength epoxy mortar. Anchor bolts shall be capable of developing unconfined pullout strength 0f 120 kN and 280 kN (30 kips and 70 kips) for M24 and M36 (1 in. and 1-1/2 in) anchor bolts respectively.

The Department reserves the right to perform in-place pullout tests (see note below). Bolts failing to meet the pullout strength requirements shall be replaced at the Contractor's expense.

Type 1 - Anchor bolts size M24 (1") or greater.
Type 2 - Anchor bolts smaller than size M24 (1").
Type 3 - Reinforced steel anchors.

The products listed above may be used for Types 2 & 3 anchors. For Type 1 anchors contact Bob Bulger, Urban & Federal Bridge Program (207-624-3490) or Doug Gayne, Transportation Research Division (207-624-3268).

DIRECTIONS

ALL REINFORCING AND ANCHORS

Proof load testing may be done when any of the following concerns arise:
1.) The quality of the installation may not be adequate
2.) The available concrete thickness is not adequate to provide unconfined pullout strength equal to the yield of the anchor.
3.) The conditions of the concrete is deteriorated, spalling or cracking.
4.) The load requirements for pullout (not shear) are structurally critical.
If the Contractor is not required to do the testing under Supplemental Specification, Section 502 (Proof Load Testing), the Urban & Federal Bridge Program has the equipment to test up to 225 kN.

The following information will be provided on the plans or in the specifications:

1. Anchor size

2. Anchor spacing and layout

3. Anchor type

4. Unconfined pullout requirement

5. Minimum anchor embedment depth

If this information is not in the contract documents, contact the Urban & Federal Bridge Program for this information.

TYPE 2 AND TYPE 3 REINFORCING STEEL < M24 (#8). ANCHORS < M24 (1")

Any product on the Prequalified List may be used as long as there is adequate embedment to develop the specified unconfined pullout. The actual depth required varies between products but may not be less than the minimum depth specified on the plans.

The minimum anchor embedment provided in the contract document is based on the depth required to prevent failure of the existing concrete, not the requirements of the anchoring material. Minimum embedment specified is usually based on the assumptions that the existing concrete strength is <3000psi and that there is less than 1/2'' of deteriorated concrete on the surface. If the concrete looks soft, poor, or there is significantly more than 1/2'' of deteriorated concrete, check with bridge design to make sure the conditions are accounted for.

TYPE 1 REINFORCING STEEL> M24 (#9). ANCHORS > M24 (1")

Anchoring material shall be selected from the Prequalified List and approved by Transportation Research Division and the Federal & Urban Bridge Program.

Sales Representatives seeking approval of a new product should submit their product's Materials Technical Data Sheet, Instructions for Installation, Material Safety Data Sheet, and a completed copy of the MaineDOT Preliminary Information for Product Evaluation Form.

Certified Test Reports: A copy of the latest certified test reports and technical data sheet shall be submitted annually for our examination. The certified test reports can be either from an independent testing laboratory or the vendor’s own laboratory, providing either laboratory is regularly inspected by the National Institute for Standards and Technology. This requirement applies to the following categories of products:

  • Concrete Anchoring Products

Certificate of Compliance: A notarized certificate of compliance is required annually for every product presently on the QPL. Each certificate should include a statement that the product currently being furnished to MaineDOT is identical in formulation, composition, name, and test properties as the product in the attached test reports or at the time of initial approval

Revisions: Any product changes will require a new Preliminary Product Evaluation Information Form, certified test report, materials technical data sheet, installation instructions, and material safety data sheets. Essentially, the product will be treated as a new product submission.

Failure to comply with the above requirements may result in removal from this list.
