Frequently Asked Questions about NGS 2000

Q. Who do I talk to about adding a Geodetic point to the National High Accuracy Reference Network (HARN)?

A. Please contact Tim LeSiege at the Maine DOT at (207) 624-3493, or email him at mdot.survey@maine.gov. You may mail to him at Maine DOT Survey Section 16 State House Station, Child St. Augusta, Maine 04330. In addition to notifying Mr. LeSiege, please fill out the "Co-observer Sign-Up Form" at http://www.ngs.noaa.gov/ADVISORS/FBN/ .

Q. What is the minimum piece of equipment is needed to join the observation party?

A. A dual frequency (L1L2) geodetic grade receiver. NGS needs to have the antennae phase patterns on record, these can found at http://www.grdl.noaa.gov/GRD/GPS/Projects/ANTCAL/ .

Q. How long is an observation?

A. Each point must be observed 3 times for five hours each time (15 hours per point). Each session (5 hours) must be done on different days at different times of the day.

Q. Who is processing all of the data?

A. NGS is responsible for processing all of the data.

Q. Who is paying for all of the work being done?

A. I don’t know. I believe each person / firm is responsible for their own time and costs.

Q. Will this substantially change the coordinate base in Maine?

A. It is my understanding that the positions may shift slightly (under a centimeter or two). If this is the case I am being told that the coordinates will not be changed anytime soon.

Q. Who is in charge of the re-observation?

A. NGS is the lead unit. MDOT is the liaison for Maine based participants.

Q. Where can I get more information?

A. See the website at http://www.ngs.noaa.gov/ADVISORS/FBN/  Additional Information since the April 28, 2000 MSLS meeting.

Q. Does an electronic format for the Federal Blue Book format exist?

A. Yes, called DDPROC and it can be found at http://www.ngs.noaa.gov/FGCS/BlueBook/

Q. Is a fixed height tripod mandatory?

A. Only for FBN points, CBN (Cooperative Base Net) points can be occupied with an adjustable height tripod. There are, however, additional information and multiple measurements to be taken and can be seen on the observation log.

Q. Can points be occupied for B order accuracy?

A. Anything occupied for less than A order accuracy (5hrs 3 times), will not be adjusted by NGS.

Q. What level monumentation is necessary?

A. See NGS Station requirements at http://www.ngs.noaa.gov/ADVISORS/FBN/ . (we would like A, B or C order Monuments)
