Safety Partnerships

The Safety Office is actively involved with many statewide safety related agencies and organizations that closely align with MaineDOT's safety objectives.

  • Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP) brings together all state agencies pursuing traffic safety interests plus other safety advocates to address Maine’s leading traffic safety concerns in a coordinated way to maximize effectiveness and efficiency of achieving improvements in target areas. The identified safety priorities are Seat Belts, Lane Departure, Aggressive Driving, and Younger/Older Drivers. Strategies to bring about improvement include Engineering, Enforcement, Education/Public Outreach, and Emergency Services. (The four E’s of Transportation Safety strategy)
  • The Maine Transportation Safety Coalition (MTSC) began first as a MaineDOT effort to collaborate with others in promoting safety initiatives throughout the state. MaineDOTrecognized that in order to implement the "four E's" MaineDOT would need to identify and partner with other state agencies having a vested interest in transportation safety. The MTSC now boasts two FHWA awards and over 50 members. The coalition members work together for the common goal of reducing injuries and saving lives of people traveling in Maine.

MTSC holds annual transportation safety conferences (2005 was a Northeast Regional event) and is implementing many other multi-disciplinary activities aimed at improving transportation safety in Maine.
