Crash Records

The Crash Records Section processes all highway crashes, approximately 35,000 a year, into an integrated database. They receive reports from the State Police who gather them from law enforcement agencies around the state. Police Crash Reports are now electronically generated. Crashes are located geographically and linked with other highway characteristics, so the department is able to identify where high incidences of crashes are occurring. With desk top data query capability, MaineDOT can conduct custom data inquiries that can assess a wide variety of crash trends. Crash studies are performed to determine where leading areas of crash activity exist and then evaluates what engineering solutions may be possible. Crash data can be also displayed in ArcView map formats.

The Crash Records Section annually prepares a variety of topical reports as well as the High Crash Location (HCL) Listing. The Safety Office does a wide variety of Safety Studies that look at statewide crash trends, crash activity on corridors and at individual locations. Crash data is shared with the Bureau of Planning to help identify locations where safety funds can be best applied for future projects.
