Commercial Vehicle Information Systems and Networks (CVISN)

The goal of the national CVISN effort is to foster a crash-free environment and enhance performance-based safety management for commercial vehicles in both the public and private sectors. CVISN will enable electronic information exchange among authorized stakeholders via open standards.

CVISN in Maine is a multi-agency project intended to improve the safety and administrative processes relative to commercial motor vehicle operations in Maine. This project is part of a larger effort relating to Intelligent Transportation Systems for Commercial Vehicle Operations (ITS/CVO).

Active participants of the ITS/CVO and CVISN efforts include:

Since its inception in August 1996, this group has developed a master plan and introduced a number of improvements. Some of these improvements include:

  • implementation of a single common USDOT number for motor carriers;

  • elimination of multiple business names for commercial carriers;

  • development of an ITS/CVO Business Plan;

  • development of a data mapping report to identify motor carrier data in State government for linkage.

  • development of a Unified Motor Carrier Administration Management System (UMCAMS), which implements the first phase of the ITS/CVO Business Plan's identified commercial vehicle registration and safety needs.

The work group is currently implementing the preliminary phase of motor carrier data consolidation and linkage.

Status: This is an ongoing long-term program intended to improve the safety performance of commercial carriers in Maine.
