durham route 136 river embankment project

Durham Route 136 River Embankment Project

May 2013 Update

A new project undate has been added to the "What's New" section of our website.

MaineDOT has been carefully monitoring an embankment supporting about two miles of Route 136 along the Androscoggin River in Durham. Recent heavy rains, coupled with changes in river elevation, triggered deterioration and forced the department to reduce traffic to one lane.

Currently, a one-third-mile segment of Route 136 has been restricted to one lane of alternating traffic immediately north of the Snow Road intersection. Two miles of road in this vicinity are being monitored. MaineDOT has determined that one mile of this road, north of the Snow Road intersection, requires attention and a permanent fix as soon as possible. MaineDOT has put this project on a fast-track and anticipates construction will begin in August. Survey, environmental and geotechnical work, as well as highway design, are now underway.

It is hoped that alternating one-way traffic can be maintained until construction begins. However, further deterioration of the embankment may necessitate full closure of the road for public safety. MaineDOT continues to watch the situation carefully and, if necessary, will move quickly to close the road, establish a detour and notify the public.

We know this essential structural work may be inconvenient for motorists. Please allow extra time and look for alternate routes.
