For an excellent guide to designing bicycle facilities at the local level, the Federal Highway Administration has published a report, "Implementing Bicycle Improvements at the Local Level".  This guide would be very useful for municipal engineers or public works departments or for bicycle advocates trying to learn more about improving facilities.  Contact the MaineDOT Bicycle/Pedestrian Coordinator for a free copy of the publication or view the document at the National Center for Bicycling and Walking website.
