Workshops
This course, "WORK ZONE TRAFFIC CONTROL",
is intended to address the safety needs of Maine's local road officials.
This course was modified from a similar course entitled "Work
Zone Safety for Municipalities, Utilities, and Contractors"
produced by the University of North Carolina. The Maine Local Roads
Center has "customized" the course to be consistent with
current practices of work zone traffic control in Maine.
This course is intended for all personnel responsible for the planning
and set up of traffic control zones and/or directing the traffic
through short-term construction and maintenance work site on Maine's
local roads. From the smallest town to the largest city, the principles
of traffic control apply to every governmental jurisdiction. Using
the "Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices" (MUTCD)
as the national standard, we have developed this course for local
use in Maine. Since the Fall of 1993, the Center has provided this
training for over 1500 individuals.
The notebook covers the following topics:
- Maine Tort Claims Act
- Liability Considerations at Roadway Work Zones
- Installation of Traffic Control Devices
- Selected Court Cases
- Part VI of the MUTCD
In addition to the contents of this notebook, these other resources
are also available:
* Pocket-sized "Work Zone Traffic Control Handbook" produced
by the Center (updated 1995)
* "Flagging
Handbook" produced by the American Traffic Safety
Services Assoc. (ATSSA)
* Pamphlet on "Quality Standards for Work Zone Traffic Control Devices"
produced by ATSSA
These materials should prepare any local road official or contractor
or utility worker for proper signing around work zones. If you have
any suggestions and comments on the program, please give me a call
any time.
