This a map of Downtown Augusta Parking and crosswalks

Some Safety Tips and Facts for Pedestrians and Motorists

  • Two-thirds of pedestrian fatalities occur between dusk and dawn. Wear reflective clothing and always carry a flashlight if you’re not in a well-lit area.
  • Look left, right and then left again before crossing….. even on a one-way street!
  • Cross the street at designated crosswalks. If there are no crosswalks, cross the street only where you can see and be seen clearly in both directions.
  • When crossing to the rail bed parking area, use the crosswalk at the south end of Commercial St (behind the Key Bank building).
  • The Front Street parking lot (bordering the Kennebec River) should be accessed via the crosswalk in front of the Key Bank Building on Water Street.
  • Don’t assume cars will stop just because you’re in a crosswalk. Make eye contact with the motorist and make sure they slow down before using the crosswalk.
  • Don’t enter a crosswalk quickly or walk out between cars. Motorists may not have a chance to slow down or stop.
  • Avoid wearing audio headphones- they can prevent you from hearing approaching vehicles, a horn or screeching brakes.
Facts
Regardless of how slowly cars are moving, pedestrians are very vulnerable. A recent study estimates that:
  • 5% of pedestrians would die if struck by a vehicle traveling 20 mph at impact;
  • 40% would die if struck by a vehicle traveling 30 mph;
  • 80% would die if struck by a vehicle traveling at 40 mph; and
  • Nearly 100% would die when struck by vehicles traveling at speeds over 50 mph.

  Plan ahead to minimize inconvenience!

  • Use Augusta’s Third Bridge or the Randolph Gardiner Bridge. This will help to free up the Father Curran Bridge for those doing business in downtown Augusta.

  • Consider carpooling, especially if you cross the Kennebec when going to work.

  • Use Park and Ride Lots at the Augusta Civic Center and at Mill Park, site of the former Edwards Mill. Meet co-workers and carpool from there.

  • Sign up for Car and Van Pools by going to www.gomaine.org

  • Is flex time an option? Peak travel time is 4 PM to 6 PM so arrive to work early and leave before the rush.

  • Remind out-of-town visitors about the closing to minimize the chance of them arriving late for your appointment.
