Interstate I-95 Redesignation
& Re-numbering Information

  • By January 10th , all road signs will have been changed to re-designate the entire length of the Maine Turnpike from Kittery to Augusta via Lewiston (currently designated I-95 and I-495) as I-95.
  • The section of Interstate from Scarborough to Gardiner via Brunswick , (currently designated as I-295 and I-95) will become I-295.
  • Once the re-designation is complete, MaineDOT will begin changing exit numbers to correspond to the nearest mile-marker numbers, and the Maine Turnpike Authority will begin this process in April. It is anticipated that all of the Interstate system signing changes will be complete by May 15 th .

Work on this project will commence January 5, 2004, during which the Interstate numbers will be changed as described above. The re-designation is scheduled to be completed by January 10, 2004. The interchange numbers will be changed to match the mile-marker number. The interchange renumbering is scheduled to be completed by May 15, 2004, and the new interchange numbers will let you know how far it is from one interchange to another. Signs showing the former exit numbers will be displayed at the bottom of at least two advance signs at each interchange; these signs will be black text on a yellow background. The “formerly” signs will remain in place until after Labor Day 2005.
