Inoperable Transfer Bridge Limits Ferry Service Between Bass Harbor and Swan's Island

MaineDOT crews are working to determine the extent of damage and attempt repairs to the transfer bridge that is used to load and unload vehicles and passengers who use the Maine State Ferry Service at Swan’s Island. Arrangements are in place to provide passenger service between Swan’s Island and Bass Harbor on the mainland three times a day through a private company.

A cable that raises and lowers the transfer bridge has unraveled and the transfer bridge remains inoperable, prohibiting the state ferry from docking. Gott Boat is providing passenger service between the island and the mainland, but is unable to transport vehicles. Those wishing to travel to and from the island can access this service through the Maine State Ferry offices at Bass Harbor and Swan’s Island. MaineDOT is still evaluating the scope of repairs. A more intensive evaluation will be conducted tomorrow, but currently it is expected that the bridge could be out of service the remainder of the week.

Last year in April, the Maine State Ferry Service transported over 900 vehicles and 4,000 passengers between Swan’s Island and Bass Harbor.
