Construction Set to Begin on I-295 in Portland, South Portland

Motorists who utilize I-295 in Portland and South Portland could experience delays as construction begins Monday, July 6 on a series of safety upgrades between exits 3 and 5 on I-295.

Project improvements to I-295 include safety improvements at exits 3, 4, and 5 as well as adding an additional lane to each direction of I-295 between Exits 3 and 4. The additional lane will make entering and exiting the highway safer. Crews will also install a cable guardrail in the median between the northbound and southbound lanes of I-295 between exits 3 and 4. A sound wall will be installed on the northbound side of I-295.

Motorists are asked to plan ahead and allow for delays, as day and nighttime construction is expected to continue into the fall. Maine State Police crews will assist with traffic control during the construction project. Shaw Brothers of Gorham is the contractor for the $5.3 million project; they expect to complete construction in November of this year.

“We appreciate the patience of motorists as we perform these important upgrades to I-295,” said MaineDOT Project Manager Ernie Martin. “The additional lanes and exit improvements will make it safer for all motorists on I-295 as vehicles enter and exit this high-volume area.”
